A commissioned instrument offers the opportunity to own something entirely unique, created specifically for you. Every violin, viola and cello I make is handcrafted in my Newark-on-Trent workshop using carefully selected European tonewoods and traditional making techniques.

Whether you are a student preparing for conservatoire, a professional musician, or an enthusiastic amateur, commissioning an instrument allows us to create something that reflects your individual playing style, tonal preferences and musical ambitions. Throughout the process, I work closely with each client to ensure the finished instrument feels as personal as it sounds.

The Commissioning Process

Initial Consultation

Every commission begins with a conversation. We will discuss your playing, the type of sound you are looking for, preferred models, dimensions where appropriate, and any questions you may have before work begins.

Design & Material Selection

Each instrument is made from carefully chosen European spruce and maple selected for their acoustic qualities, appearance and long-term stability. The choice of wood plays an important role in the character of the finished instrument.

Making Your Instrument

Every stage of construction is completed by hand in my workshop, from carving the plates and scroll to purfling, varnishing and final professional set-up. Traditional methods are used throughout while allowing each instrument to develop its own individual character.

Delivery

Before collection or delivery, every instrument undergoes a complete professional set-up and tonal adjustment. This ensures it performs at its full potential from the very beginning.

Aftercare

Following completion, I offer a complimentary consultation within the first six months to assess the instrument and make any minor adjustments that may be beneficial as it settles into regular playing.

Investment & Upfront Costs

Commissioning a bespoke instrument is an investment in artistry and excellence.
To initiate the process, I require a 20% non-refundable deposit, which covers the cost of premium materials
and secures your project in my schedule.
The remaining balance is divided across project milestones, with the final payment due upon delivery.

This approach ensures transparency and allows you to follow the progress of your instrument’s
creation with confidence.

Questions About Commissioning an Instrument

How long does it take to commission an instrument?

The time required depends on my current workload and the type of instrument being commissioned. During our initial consultation, I will provide an estimated completion date and keep you informed throughout the making process.

Can I choose the model?

Yes. We will discuss the model that best suits your playing style and musical preferences. Whether you have a particular historical inspiration or would like guidance, I will help you select the most suitable design.

Can I choose the varnish colour?

Absolutely. While my varnishing follows traditional methods, I can discuss the overall colour and character you would like your instrument to have, from lighter golden tones to deeper red-brown finishes.

Can I commission a violin, viola or cello?

Yes. I accept commissions for violins, violas and cellos, with every instrument individually handcrafted in my Newark-on-Trent workshop.

Is a deposit required?

Yes. A 20% non-refundable deposit is required to confirm your commission and secure the purchase of materials. The remaining balance is payable upon completion before collection or delivery.

Can I visit the workshop during the making process?

Yes. Where practical, I am always happy to welcome clients to the workshop to see how their instrument is progressing and discuss any questions along the way.

What happens after I receive my instrument?

Each commissioned instrument includes a complimentary follow-up consultation within the first six months. This allows me to check the instrument after it has settled into regular playing and make any minor adjustments if required.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. Instruments can be carefully packaged and shipped internationally. Shipping arrangements, insurance and associated costs will be discussed before dispatch.
