Working from my workshop in Newark-on-Trent, I provide professional set-up services for musicians across the UK. Whether your instrument requires a completely new bridge, a soundpost adjustment, peg fitting or tonal refinement, every adjustment is carried out with precision and respect for the individual character of the instrument.

why Does a Professional Set-Up Matter?

A violin, viola or cello can only perform to its full potential when every element of the set-up works in harmony. Even the finest instrument can feel difficult to play or fail to produce its best sound if the bridge, soundpost or other components are not correctly adjusted.

Professional set-up is about far more than replacing worn parts. It involves carefully assessing how each adjustment influences the instrument’s response, balance and tonal character. Small changes can have a significant impact on projection, clarity, comfort and the ease with which the instrument speaks.

Every instrument is unique. The density of the wood, the arching, the varnish and the way an instrument has matured over time all influence how it responds. For this reason, there is no universal solution. Each set-up is approached individually, respecting the character of the instrument while helping it perform at its very best.

Whether fitting a new bridge, adjusting a soundpost, reshaping the nut, dressing the fingerboard or advising on string choice, my aim is always the same: to achieve a set-up that allows the musician to play with greater confidence, comfort and freedom of expression.

Every bridge is individually fitted to the instrument to ensure the correct string height, balance and tonal response. The most appropriate bridge is recommended following a free consultation.

Standard Bridge

A Standard Bridge is recommended for entry-level and intermediate instruments where reliability, playability and value are the priority. It is carefully fitted to the individual instrument, ensuring correct string height, bridge position and tonal balance.

Professional Bridge

A Professional Bridge is individually selected from premium-quality aged maple and hand carved to suit the instrument. It allows for greater tonal refinement, projection and responsiveness, making it ideal for higher-quality instruments and discerning players.

The choice of bridge is determined by the quality and requirements of the instrument rather than the level of the player. I am always happy to recommend the most appropriate option following an assessment.

Bridge Prices**

Bridge prices include fitting and final adjustment.
The final cost may vary depending on the bridge blank selected, including its quality, model and manufacturer. Premium bridge blanks and specialist brands are available upon request. Cello bridge prices may vary depending on the model and brand selected.

Soundpost Services

The soundpost plays a crucial role in supporting the structure of the instrument while influencing its balance, response and tonal character. Even small adjustments can make a noticeable difference to the way an instrument performs.
